Background

Fentonia Colliery is owned by Joe Singh Group — the South Africa-based company of Mpumalanga billionaire pastor and coal baron, Joe Singh.[1]

Controversy & Litigation

In March 2015, the Fentonia mine reached a coal supply agreement with Eskom to supply 60,000-115,000 kilotonnes of coal annually. However, following a contractual dispute over allegations that the quality of the coal supplied was substandard, a court battle between the two parties ensued.[2] Mpumalanga's high court ultimately ruled in favor of Mr. Singh and ordered Eskom to pay his company more than R2 billion in damages.[1]
