Background
Forzando Complex Coal Mine is an underground mine in Bethal, Mpumalanga, South Africa.[2] It forms part of the Exxaro Coal Central (ECC) Complex.
Forzando Coal Mines (pty) Ltd. operates the Forzando mine, which is currently owned by Overlooked Colliery. Previously, the mine was owned by Exxaro Resources, but in May 2021, Exxaro sold to a 100% black-owned mining company by the name of Overlooked Colliery. The sale was prompted by an internal portfolio review in which Exxaro identified assets which were non-core to its future strategic objectives, resulting in the decision to sell its total equity interest in the ECC (which includes the Forzando, Dorstfontein, and Tumelo mines in Mpumalanga).[3]
The Forzando complex is comprised of two mines, the Forzando North Colliery (FZON) and the Forzando South Colliery (FZOS). In 2014 delayed capital inject led to the FZOS mine being put under care and maintenance.[4]
