The Juana Azurduy gas pipeline, also known as GIJA, is an operating natural gas pipeline in Bolivia and Argentina.[1]

Location

Starting from a connection point with the Yabog gas pipeline in Campo Grande (near Yacuiba, Tarija department, Bolivia) the Juana Azurduy (GIJA) pipeline runs 15 km east on the Bolivian side of the border to the Madrejones gas field. At Madrejones it crosses south into Argentina and continues 37 km to the Refinor refinery in Campo Durán, where it connects with Argentina's Gasoducto Norte[2] and Gasoducto del Noreste Argentino.[3][4][5] In Yacuiba, the GIJA pipeline also connects with Bolivia's GASYRG pipeline.[6]

Background

The Bolivian section is operated by YPFB and the Argentine section is operated by Enarsa.[7]

The Juana Azurduy pipeline has traditionally served as a key component in a larger network designed to export Bolivian gas to Argentina. However, as of 2023, with the impending completion of Argentina's Néstor Kirchner gas pipeline, there was speculation that the pipeline's direction could be reversed to allow exports of gas from Argentina's Vaca Muerta formation to Brazil via Bolivia.[8]
