Background

Gemini Coal Mine is a proposed open-cut coal mine planned for 6 kilometres west of Dingo township and 120 kilometres west-southwest from Rockhampton in Central Queensland, Australia.[1][2]

Gemini Mine is a small-scale project that will provide metallurgical coal to the international steel making industry.[2] The coal will be transported by a surface conveyor from the product stockpiles to a train load out facility and rail loop connecting to the Blackwater-Gladstone Branch Rail to coal terminals at Gladstone for export.[2]

The mine's owner-operator, Magnetic South, anticipates a 25-year project lifespan, with a yield of up to 1.9 million run-of-mine (ROM) tonnes per annum.[2]

Mine construction activities were originally scheduled to commence in July 2021, subject to grant of the Project ML and environmental authority (EA), however, a land dispute has delayed this.[2] (The company holds a pre-existing tenure that sits over the property of Allan and Jane Vaughn, who own organic beef property Red Rock Park.) If Magnetic South wins its case over the Vaughns in the Land Court, its next step would be to apply for a mining lease through the Department of Resources and then get a final tick of approval from the Resources Minister.[3]

Environmental Controversy

In November 2022, the Gemini coal mine project gained publicity for being one of several projects located in Great Barrier Reef catchments and floodplains that was exempted from needing an environmental impact statement (EIS) by the Queensland government because it is proposed it would produce less than two million tonnes of coal a year. Without an EIS, the public could be excluded from providing comments on the project's terms of reference. This would instead leave the mining company to largely define what issues they address in their environmental assessments.[5]
