Background

Located on the western outskirts of São Paulo, the Araçariguama steel plant is among the largest and newest of Gerdau's 13 crude steel-producing facilities in Brazil.[2] The melt shop, equipped with a state-of-the-art electric arc furnace (EAF), began operating in 2006, with an initial crude steel capacity of 900 ttpa (thousand tonnes per annum).[3][4] The adjacent rolling mill, with an annual capacity of 600 ttpa[2], specializes in rebar for the construction and infrastructure sectors in São Paulo state, Brazil's largest steel market.[4]
