Background

Gorman North Coal Project is a proposed opencast coal mine in the state of New South Wales, Australia.[3] Gorman North will occupy the area to the north-west of the existing Narrabri coal mine and would extend Narrabri's mine life.

The project is one of several sites listed as “potential areas for proactive release for coal exploration" under the strategic release framework and also under the operational allocation framework.[4] Both allow existing coal exploration, assessment, or production titleholders to apply for an additional exploration title to avoid sterilization of resources, support better mine design, or expand existing mining operations.[5]

As of March 2022, the process to release the area for exploration has not formally commenced.[6]

Environmental Concerns

The above-mentioned strategic release and operational allocation frameworks will allow Whitehaven to seek out sites for a mine extension closer to Narrabri, including under the edges of the Pilliga state conservation area.[4] Anti-coal action group, Lock The Gate, has condemned the move, warning of threats to groundwater, endangered species, and native forest if Whitehaven built coal mines in the area.[4][7]
