Background

The Gostar Almas steel plant in Saqqez, was planned to open in 2021 or 2022, but has faced persistent delays due to conflicts between owners.^[1] When opened, it will contain a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) unit with a capacity of 1.4 million tons per year.^[2] The DRI produced is slated for export to the Kurdish autonomous region of Iraq.^[3]
