Guangxi Gas Pipeline Network 广西天然气管网 is a pipeline network in Guangxi Autonomous Region, China, with segments that are proposed, in construction, and operating.

Network background

On December 30, 2012, the Guangzhou–Nanning Gas Pipeline, a branch of the West–East Pipeline 2, began operation[1]. This marked the first time a natural gas pipeline entered Guangxi and began supplying gas to the region.

Another gas source is the Sino–Myanmar Gas Pipeline, which transports gas from Kyaukpyu, Myanmar. It enters Guangxi at Hechi and terminates at Guigang. The Sino–Myanmar Gas Pipeline began operating in 2013.[2]

There are two LNG terminals in Guangxi; however, only the Guangxi LNG Terminal in Beihai distributes regasified LNG through pipelines. This terminal began operations in 2016.

Relying on these three gas sources, Guangxi established its regional natural gas pipeline network. In Guangxi, natural gas is primarily used for household consumption.

By 2020, Guangxi had completed 2,638 kilometers of gas pipelines, reaching all 12 municipalities. The region aims to add another 2,600 kilometers by 2025.[3]

In February 2021, Guangxi issued the Urban Gas Development Plan of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (2021–2030) (广西壮族自治区城镇燃气发展规划 2021–2030年).[4]

As of June 2019, the plan noted that the total length of operating gas pipelines in the region had reached 2,282 kilometers across nine main pipelines. In addition, there were several dedicated shorter pipelines serving various cities and counties, totaling 402 kilometers (including both operational and under-construction segments).[4]

The development plan projected that provincial-level natural gas consumption in 2025 would be four times higher than in 2019. To meet and stimulate this anticipated demand, the province aims to accelerate the development of natural gas infrastructure, including LNG terminals and processing facilities, gas storage, and pipeline networks.[4][5]

To support this growth and achieve the goal of county-wide pipeline access (县县通), the plan outlines a three-phase proposal:

  • By 2022: Construction of 16 county-level branch pipelines
  • By 2025: Construction of an additional 17 county-level branch pipelines
  • By 2030: Construction of another 18 county-level pipelines, contingent on population needs and natural gas market conditions

Project details

Guangxi LNG Terminal Transport Pipeline 广西LNG外输管线[7]

The pipeline originates from the Beihai LNG Terminal and consists of one main pipeline and six branch lines.[8] Its original total length was 1,332 kilometers.[9]

Due to changing market demand, the main pipeline segment between Liuzhou and Hechi, along with four branch lines, was cancelled. As a result, the main pipeline was shortened to 497 kilometers, reducing the total length to 731 kilometers.[9]

In July 2020, ownership of the pipeline, along with the Beihai LNG Terminal, was transferred to PipeChina.[10]

Beihai-Maoming Branch 粤西支线 (北海-茂名)

The Beihai–Maoming Branch, also known as the Guangdong West Branch (粤西支线), was partially completed in 2019 with the commissioning of the Beihai–Zhanjiang segment. [12]The operational date of the Zhanjiang–Maoming segment remains unclear. By September 2020, the entire pipeline had passed completion inspection[13] and was fully commissioned on August 8, 2020.[14]

Guangxi Natural Gas Branch Pipeline Network 广西天然气支线管网项目[4]

In March 2021, the province released a plan for implementing the Guangxi Energy Network.[28]

As part of this plan, 27 natural gas pipeline projects were identified as having entered the construction phase in 2020, with work continuing into 2021.[28] Many of these projects were already included in the original urban gas development plan.[4]

Hepu-Bobai-Pubei Branch Pipeline 合浦—博白—浦北天然气支线管道

It was proposed and received permit for construction in June 2020 . It will run from Bobai, Yulin, Guangxi, China to Pubei, Qinzhou, Guangxi, China.[29][30]
