Background

The Ilgin coal mine is an underground mine, operated by Konya Ilgın Elektrik Üretim A.Ş., a subsidiary of Ciner Group with a capacity of 0.3 million tonnes per annum, in Ilgin, Konya, Turkey.[2] The mine will provide fuel to the proposed Ilgın power station. Mining at the Ilgın mine started in 1978, when Ilgın Linyitleri İşletmesi (Ilgın Lignite Enterprise) or ILİ was founded as a subsidiary of TKI, the state coal mine.[3] ILİ operated the mine until 2012, after which its operation was taken over by Ciner Group's Konya Ilgın Elektrik Üretim A.Ş. through a privatization tender.[4] In 2013, Ilgın Kontrol Müdürlüğü (Ilgın Regulatory Directorate) was established as a subsidiary of TKİ to monitor the mine's operation under the private company.[5]

According to Ciner Group's website, Ilgın Coal Mine has 138 million tons of total reserves.[4] In 2019, the company announced that they were scheduled to produce 420 thousand tons of coal a year until 2024.[6]
