Illawarra Coal

Illawarra Coal, the common name for Illawarra Coal Holdings, is a subsidiary of BHP Billiton and owns and operates three metallurgical coal mines in the Illawarra area south of Sydney.

In its 2009 annual report, BHP Billiton reported that the Illawarra mines produced 6.3 million tonnes and that the reserve lives of its mines "at current production rates range from five years to 14 years." The company also noted that 11% of the coal from the Illawarra mines was thermal coal.[1]

The company stated that the Illawarra mines supply metallurgical coal to the nearby BlueScope Steel's Port Kembla Steelworks as well as domestic and export markets "under contracts with annually negotiated prices."[1]
