Background

The JSPL Odisha plant houses India's largest 4.25 mtpa blast furnace.[1] On 22 August, 2021, JSPL announced its plans to expand capacity of the Angul plant from 6 mtpa to 25.2 mtpa liquid steel (24.79 mtpa crude steel) by 2030. The expansion is planned in two phases. The company had already received approval from Odisha’s State High-Level Clearance Authority, headed by Chief Minister of Odisha.[2][3] According to an OECD report from 2021, an expansion of 6500 ttpa is planned using primary steel production route which is expected to become operational by 2030.[4] A pre-feasibility report dated 05 July, 2022, outlines an expansion plan involving setting up of an integrated steel plant of 19.2 mtpa crude steel capacity. [5] As of 30 September, 2022, the company was all set to go ahead with the project after gaining local people's support at a public hearing attended by over 600 people.[6][7]

As of November 2023, the expansion plan to double the capacity of the plant using primary steel production route was already underway and is expected to be completed in FY25.[8] The second phase expansion would be taken up after completing the first phase.[9]
