JSW Green Steel Salav plant , also known as Welspun Maxsteel (formerly), Vikram Ispat (formerly), is a steel plant in Salav, Murud, Raigad, Maharashtra, India that operates electric arc furnace (EAF), ironmaking, and direct reduced iron (DRI) technology.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Salav, Murud, Raigad, Maharashtra, India:
Location: Salav, taluka Murud, district Raigad, Maharashtra, India
Coordinates (WGS 84 ): 18.530853, 72.947091 (exact)
Background
The plant was set up in 1989 as Vikram Ispat by Aditya Birla Group with a design capacity of 750 ttpa.[ 1] Welspun acquired the plant in 2009 and renamed it as Welspun Maxsteel.[ 2] JSW Steel acquired the plant in 2014 for INR 1,000 crores.[ 3] [ 4] [ 5] A proposal to set up and integrated steel plant of capacity 1.5 mtpa was modified in 2015 due to shortage of natural gas. The new proposal involved setting up a 3 mtpa steel plant using Corex technology and EAF at a cost of INR 12,000 crores.[ 6] [ 7] The expansion project seems to have been dropped as there have been no updates on it since 2015 and it does not appear in JSW steels overall expansion plans.[ 8]
In February 2024, JSW Green Steel Limited was incorporated by JSW Steel for setting up a 4 mtpa integrated green steel plant at the Salav Works in phases. In March 2025, the Salav unit with 0.9 mtpa DRI capacity was officially transferred to JSW Green Steel Limited.[ 9] JSW Steel plans to spend INR 50,000 to 60,000 crore on expanding capacity at the Salav Works over a period of three to four years to build a production capacity of 10 mtpa.[ 10]
