Background

In October 2024, JSW Group and POSCO signed a framework agreement to develop a 5 million metric tonnes per annum integrated mill in India along with investments in battery materials and renewable energy. The new plant will produce hot-rolled, cold-rolled and galvanized steel.[1][2] This is POSCO’s fourth attempt to establish a foothold in India over the past 15 years.[3]

As of September 2025, the Odisha government had begun acquiring land for the mega steel plant. A total of 2,466 acres across eight villages in Patna tehsil have been earmarked for the project including 976 acres of government land and 1,490 acres of private land.[4] It also involves 794 acres of forest land, of which 60 acres are in private possession.[5] The plant will be jointly set up by JSW and POSCO with an investment of INR 40,000 crore.[6]
