Background

The JSW Steel Bengal steel plant was first proposed in 2007. JSW Steel planned to build the 10,000 ttpa plant and a nearby 1,600 MW captive power plant for a Rs 35,000 crore investment. It was delayed after disputes with the local government over the land acquisition (the plant would take 4,300 acres of land).[1]

In 2013, JSW Steel announced they would put the Bengal project on hold after they were unable to secure a long term iron ore supply agreement or a captive iron ore mine.[1]

In 2014, JSW Steel announced they had 'given up' on the project due to the above issues, as well as general concern over the financial viability of the plant.[2]

JSW owns a cement plant and a captive power plant at the site. In February 2023, JSW initiated the process to earmark a portion of the land to be returned to the Bengal state government after the government indicated its willingness to take it back.[3][4] As of September 2023, JSW Group plans to develop an industrial park at the land to attract domestic and international investors.[5][6] In September 2023, former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly announced his plans to set up an steel plant on the land given to JSW group.[7][8]
