Background

Janschwalde power station is a thermal power plant in the southeast of Brandenburg and is mainly fired with lignite from the Jänschwalde and Welzow-Süd opencast mines. The phase-out of coal-fired power generation in Germany required the shutdown of power plant block F on October 1, 2018, with block E to follow on October 1, 2019. But both blocks were kept on standby through 2024 to cover supply bottlenecks. On 16 January 2020, the German government ( Merkel IV Cabinet ) decided to completely shut down the Jänschwalde power plant by 2028. On March 31, 2024, the two 500 MW units E and F were taken off standby and retired.
