Background

The Jembayan coal mine is an opencast mine, operated by Sakari Resources, in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.[10] Sakari Resources operates the Jembayan mine.

According to a 2018 account by Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Indonesia, the mine began coal production in 2003 and has continued operating in the area since.[11]

Jembayan is among the coal producers named in a January 2022 CNBC Indonesia report on the Indonesian government's decision to lift a coal export ban for 139 companies after they met their Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) coal-supply requirements to state utility PT PLN. The Directorate General of Mineral and Coal (Ditjen Minerba) issued the decree restoring export rights to these companies effective January 20, 2022, following a supply directive issued in late December 2021 tied to fulfilling domestic power-generation coal needs.[12]
