Background

Essar Power Salaya Ltd. proposed the 2 x 600 MW coal-fired power station near Kajurda and Nana Manda villages in August 2023.[3][4] According to the project's pre-feasibility report, the Kajurda power station was proposed in the vicinity of Essar Power's other existing 2 x 600 MW coal plant in the area, Salaya power plant, to enable sharing of facilities between plants.[5] The area is also 8 km away from a protected Marine National Park.[4]

Essar Power had previously proposed a 600 MW coal plant in the Nana Manda area, the now cancelled Nana Madha power station.

Essar Power's proposal for the Kajurda power station stated that construction was likely to start in December 2023 and be complete in December 2026.[4]

In September 2023, Essar's application for Terms of Reference (TOR) was referred to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC).[3] However, the proposal was deferred during the EAC's meeting, due to the proponent's absence.[6]

As of April 2024, the project's TOR did not yet appear to have been revisited or granted by the EAC, and no further news of the project's progress was available.
