Background

The Kalinovskaya-Vostochnaya Coal Mine (Шахта Калиновська-Східна) is an underground coal mine located in the Kalinovo settlement of Makiivka, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. It is operated by Makeevugol State Enterprise, subordinate to the Ministry of Energy of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, controlled by Russia.[6]

According to the official Makeevugol website, the mine was commissioned in 1957 and has a design capacity of 320,000 tonnes per year, with an installed production capacity of 250,000 tonnes per year as of 2018. The last major reconstruction took place between 2006 and 2008. Industrial reserves stood at 11.269 million tonnes as of 1 January 2018, of which 5.481 million tonnes were in the seam under active extraction. The mine produced coking coal (grade K).[6]

The reconstruction of 2006–2008 was prompted by near-total wear of the mine's haulage system. The previous transport chain extended almost 4 km and had deteriorated to the point that it could no longer reliably bring coal to the surface, effectively halting mining in 2006. The reconstruction replaced 12 conveyors with three, cutting the haulage distance to 1,350 metres. One of the new conveyors — a man-and-materials rubber-cable belt — transported personnel and coal along an inclined roadway of over 800 metres at a gradient of 17 degrees.[7]

In November 2018, the fifth eastern longwall of seam l1 was commissioned, with reserves of approximately 440,000 tonnes, a face length of 240 metres, and seam thickness of 1.19 m. The mine's acting director at the time stated that the new longwall was expected to provide the workforce with a production front until April 2020.[8]

In early 2022, a new fourth eastern longwall was brought into production following a period of several months during which mining had been halted due to deteriorating geological conditions in the previous longwall. The new face had reserves of approximately 440,000 tonnes and a face length of 240 metres.[9]

The mine's recorded production in 2019 was 0.23 Mt.[10]

No production data or operational updates were identified for years subsequent to 2022. None of the Makeevugol mines, including Kalinovskaya-Vostochnaya, were taken up by any private investor under Russia's 2024 programme to lease occupied-territory coal mines to Russian companies.[11]

According to some sources, as of mid-2023, the mine appeared to be operating.[3] However there was no further news on the mine since then and it is likely that it is not producing.
