Background
The pipeline's construction is rationalized by the need to provide the population of the West Kazakhstan region with relatively cheap gas from the Karachaganak oil and gas field and reducing of the region's dependence on natural gas imports from the Russian Federation. The construction was first proposed by the former President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev. The pipeline connects to the Soyuz Gas Pipeline (Orenburg-Novopskov Gas Pipeline) in the area of Novenky settlement, 15 kilometers away from Uralsk.[11]
The Karachaganak-Uralsk II gas pipeline (looping) was included in the Comprehensive Development Plan of the Gas Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2025-2029 that was approved in June 2025. The pipeline will be owned by QazaqGaz and is expected to be commissioned in 2028. The financing scheme is still in development.[9]
