Background

Karakansky-Zapadny coal mine (Караканский-Западный разрез) is an operating surface mine in the Belovo district in the Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The Karakansky-Zapadny coal mine is a surface mine owned and operated by Shakhta Belovskaya CJSC (ЗАО Шахта Беловская), which is owned by Karakan Invest.[4] In late 2021 Karakan Invest was acquired by EcoCarbonInvest.[5] Shakhta Belovskaya CJSC also owns the Yevtinsky Perspektivny coal mine[6].

Karakan Invest is creating the coal energy cluster merging the extraction, processing and generating capacities of the Karakansky coal deposits including underground coal gasification on the site and production of coal to liquid fuel.[7] Karakan Invest further includes a logistics company Belcommerce, an engineering company Promishlennik and the trading company Karakan Energo Trade.[8]

Most of the operating indicators and investment plans are reported by Karakan Invest jointly for the Karakansky-Zapadny coal mine and the Yevtinsky Perspektivny coal mine. Joint production reached 4.8 million tonnes in 2021 and 4.7 million tonnes in 2022.[9][10]

In 2020 it was 4.4 million tonnes in 2020[9], of which 2.1 million was contributed by Karakansky-Zapadny coal mine.[6] No separate mine production figure is available for 2021 or 2022.

About half of the coal produced is exported.[9]

The company mentioned in its Development Strategy from 2020 a plan to expand the seam to 6 million tonnes.[11] However due to the lack of news on this expansion and the recent news on suspension of new investment activity in Kuzbass[12], this project can be considered as Shelved.
