Background
Karazhyra Coal Mine (разрез Каражыра) is a SURFACE mine in East Kazakhstan. The mine is owned and operated by Karazhyra JSC since 2002.[8]
The company is listed on the Kazakh Stock Exchange.[9] It is owned by the Ogay family (70%) and other private individuals (30%).[10]
Production reached 8.4 million tonnes in 2021, of which 5.9 was sold in Kazakhstan to coal-fired power plants and 2.3 was exported.[11] In 2022, production reached 8.7 million tonnes, of which 1.6 was exported.[12]
In 2024, coal production at the mine reached 7.5 million tonnes.[13]
The company planned to increase annual output by 73% to 14.2 million tonnes by 2029, driven by coal demand from new power plants under construction in Semey, Ust-Kamenogorsk and Kurchatov, with a combined annual coal requirement of around 6 million tonnes.[14]
