Background
Karazhyra Coal Mine (разрез Каражыра) is a SURFACE mine in East Kazakhstan.
The mine is owned and operated by Karazhyra JSC since 2002.[3] The company is listed on the Kazakh Stock Exchange.[4] It is owned by the Ogay family (70%) and other private individuals (30%).[5]
Mining started in 1990 and by the end of 2019, 113 million tonnes had been produced.[6]
Production reached 8.4 million tonnes in 2021, of which 5.9 was sold in Kazakhstan to coal-fired power plants and 2.3 was exported.[7] In 2022, production reached 8.7 million tonnes, of which 1.6 was exported.[8]
