Background
The Katewaka Coal Project is a proposed opencast coal mine to be operated by the Tanzanian government's National Development Corporation (NDC) in Muhumbi Village, Ludewa, Njombe, Tanzania.
The project will supply 1.5 Mtpa of coal to local cement industries and is expected to generate roughly 1,000 local jobs.[1][2]
As of 2025, the project remains stalled due to a dispute over a three percent management fee between the NDC and the project's investor, MM Steel Resources.[2]
