Background

Khanh Hoa Coal Mine uses a combination of underground and surface (open-pit) methods, and as of 2024 employed roughly 600 workers, extracting an estimated 400,000–500,000 tonnes of raw coal annually, with 2019–2024 output totaling around 7 million tonnes of clean coal.

Earlier company reporting shows the mine's output at about 360,000 tonnes of raw coal over 9 months in 2016, when the pit covered nearly 1 km² and the workforce numbered over 840; the company also carried out periodic environmental monitoring and paid roughly VND 700 million toward site-rehabilitation funds that year.

A 2018-launched open-pit expansion project (Northern pit extension) displaced 126 households in Son Cam commune. By late 2023, the mine faced site-specific difficulties completing land-clearance and resettlement for households affected by its mining plans. As of late 2024, 106 of these households were still awaiting resettlement land more than six years after the project began.
