The Kolar Pimpri Opencast Coalmine Project is a 1.50 million tonnes per anum (MTPA) project located at Wani North area, Yavatmal district, Maharashtra, India. Besides other coal mines, there are a lot of lime kiln and fire bricks industries near the project area.

Location

The satellite image below shows the area of the mine at Wani North area, Yavatmal district, Maharashtra. Kolar-Pimpri Opencast Project is located on the right bank of the Wardha river in Wani Tahsil of the Yavatmal district of Maharashtra State. It is administered by Wani North Area of Western Coalfields Limited. The project is connected by a fair-weathered road with Wani town via Bhalar village in North-west and Ghughus colliery via Ukni village in the south. Wani is connected to state highway 84 via Warora. Ghughus railway station is 12 km away and Wani railway station is 14 km away from the project. [1]

Background on Mine

The Kolar Pimpri Opencast Project of 1.05 MTPA capacity in a Mine Lease area of 511 ha was granted Environment Clearance on 20th May 2005 and the proposal for expansion of the Kolar Pimpri Extension Opencast Coalmine Project from 1.05 MTPA to 1.50 MTPA production capacity and expansion in Mine Lease area from 511 ha to 1488.42 ha was granted Environment Clearance on 29th April 2010. River Wardha flows at a distance of 100m from the ML. A major part of the ML is below the HFL of River Wardha (186.20mRL). An embankment has been constructed. The project involves modification of the natural drainage by the diversion of a stream. Type of mining is opencast by a mechanised method involving shovel-dumper.

As per the News Article titled "Coal India's 177 mines downgraded, power firms to benefit" published in DNA on 17th April 2017, the quality of coal from the mine was reduced from Grade 9 to Grade 10. [3]
