Background

The Kolubara Field D and E coal mine is a surface mine near Barosevac, Serbia.

The Kolubara Field D and E coal mine is part of Kolubara Mine Complex.

It was previously referred to as Polje D mine.

It is located in the eastern part of the Kolubara basin, around the towns Zeoke, Sakulja and Barosevac.

As per 2019 Euracoal Report, preparatory works were in progress to develop open-pit mine Field E, with 400 million tonnes of lignite reserves, as a replacement for Field D.  The E mine’s planned annual output was 12 million tonnes.[3] In August 2019 it was reported that Field E project has been completed.[4] From 2019 onwards EPS showed joint production from Fields D and E in its annual technical reports.[5] In 2022, production was reported only for Filed E at 6.8 million tonnes.[6] It is therefore assumed that production at Field D has now discontinued. As per 2008 EBRD's document, Field D should have discontinued mining already already by 2016.[7]

Media reports from January 2023 reported a landslide affecting Field E coal mine that trapped some of the mining equipment.[8] There were no casualties and it appeared that production would be shortly restored.
