Krakatau Steel Cilegon plant is a steel plant in Cilegon, Banten, Indonesia that operates blast furnace (BF), ironmaking, basic oxygen furnace (BOF), electric arc furnace (EAF), and direct reduced iron (DRI) technology.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Cilegon, Banten, Indonesia:

- Coordinates (WGS 84): -6.007021, 106.001766 (exact)
Background
Krakatau Steel Plant is the largest steel maker in Indonesia, headquartered in Cilegon, Banten.[1] It is a state-owned enterprise which was initiated in 1960 and began operation on August 31, 1970.[2][3] The plant houses ironmaking production facilities in the form of a Direct Reduction Plant and steelmaking in the form of 10 electric arc furnaces.[4] The operations of its blast furnace was stopped in 2019 because of poor economics. The company is planning to restart its operations and has signed an MoU with Baowu group Zhongnan Co Ltd for reactivation of the blast furnace in May 2022.[5] The company was seeking investment for the project which would also be used to install a basic oxygen furnace to optimize operations.[6] As of December 2024, the progress of the re-operation of its blast furnace is at 60%. The accumulated impairment losses of the blast furnace as of December 31, 2024 was USD 467,103[7].
Krakatau steel plant is planning to raise total capacity to 10 mtpa by 2025 after adding a further 4 million-tonne capability.[8] As of November 2023, PT Krakatau Steel was in discussions with Chinese partner Baowu's subsidiary, Zhongnan Steel to finalise details of a joint venture to support the expansion project.[9]
