Background

The Krasnobrodsky coal mine (Краснобродский разрез) is a surface mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.[5] The Krasnobrodsky coal mine is a operated by Kuzbassrazrezugol, a subsidiary of Ural Mining Metallurgical Company.

The mine is spread out across three sections: Krasnobrodsky, Novosergeevsky and Vakhrushevksy, which were commissioned in 1947, 1956 and 1969, respectively.[6]

There is very little information available on the mine on the company's website. Production has been consistently stable at 7.5-8 million tonnes per annum over 2019-2021. There are no 2022 production figures, however Kuzbassrazrezugol reported in its 2022 annual report that the volume of well drilling and the volume of rock blasting at the mine increased by 18% and 17%, respectively, compared with 2021. This can be an indication that production increased in 2022.[7]

In 2020 it appeared that the company plans to expand the operations at Vakhrushevsky-Gluboky section. Preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment was published in 2020.[8] According to the assessment, the expanded area can generate 1.65 million tonnes of coal per annum (page 10).[8] The mining area would be only 3km north of the city of Prokopyevsk, and 1km west of the city of Kiselevsk.[8] The area is already heavily mined. Public consultation announcements were made in 2022.[9] As of July 2023, there was no further news on this.

An earthquake of magnitude of 5.3 was registered in the area of the coal mine in January 2022.[10] Another earthquake occurred in March 2023 with a magnitude of 4.4. [11]
