Background

Construction of the Larino-Chieti gas pipeline began in April 2019[6], but as of April 2020, work on the pipeline was reportedly blocked.[12] A September 3, 2020 article in Primonumero states that legal disputes over land usage are a cause of delay to the project.[13]

In October 2021, 37 year old construction worker Ivan Rosalia was crushed to death by a landslide while working on the pipeline's construction.[14]

The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) Ten Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) refers to the project as TRA-F-409.[15]

Opposition

The Larino-Chieti project has prompted opposition from residents along the pipeline's path, especially in the community of Montecilfone, where the city council has opposed the pipeline's route through the Bosco Corunduli woodland and the mayor has raised a formal complaint with the Molise regional government, challenging the expropriation of public lands for the project.[6][13]

Financing

In October 2018, the European Investment Bank signed a loan agreement with Gasdotti Italia to provide €90 million (US$107 million) financing for the construction of both the Larino-Chieti gas pipeline and the company's 34.5 kilometre San Marco–Recanati Pipeline which is also under construction.[16]
