Background

The Las Lajitas Mine is a shelved coal mine project in the municipality of Rafael Urdaneta, Taguay parish, Aragua state, Venezuela. The project was sponsored by the Corporación Venezolana de Minería (CVM) in partnership with unnamed Venezuelan private investors.

The Las Lajitas deposit lies within the carboniferous belt of southern Aragua, one of several coal-bearing zones identified by Venezuela's Ministry of Ecological Mining Development.

In June 2019, President Nicolás Maduro announced an initial investment of €71 million in a public-private partnership to develop Las Lajitas as part of the Plan Sectorial Minero 2019–2025. At the time, the project was in early exploration phase, with international reserve certification as the immediate objective. Long-term plans called for production of 1 million tonnes per year and projected annual revenues of €45 million. Coal from the mine was intended primarily for the CVM's Lomas de Níquel industrial operations in Aragua state, with the remainder for domestic and international markets.

No subsequent reporting confirmed that reserve certification or production targets were achieved. The GEM Coal Mine Tracker classified the project as shelved as of its May 2025 release.
