Background

The Libyan Iron and Steel Misrata plant started operating in 1979. It is state-owned, and the largest steel manufacturer in the country. Due to regional political unrest, the plant's production has fluctuated throughout the years.[1] In 2022, an industrial fire in the direct reduction plant resulted in the deaths of two firefighters, as well as injury of four others who responded to the fire. [2] In 2024, the company announced a partnership with Danieli to construct a new DRI plant with a capacity of 2 million tons.[3] The plant is a major exporter of Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) produced at the direct reduction plant to other Arab countries and Europe.[4]
