Background

The Lingaraj coal mine is an opencast mine operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, with a capacity of 20 million tonnes per annum. It is located on the Talcher coalfield in Angul, Odisha state, India. The Lingaraj mine is a part of the 61.83 million tonne-per-annum Talcher coal mines cluster owned by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (a subsidiary of state-owned Coal India).

The initial project received environmental clearance in February 1991, and operations began that same year. Lingaraj mine also received approval for two expansions: one on 2 February 2006, and another on 27 November 2015 to expand its production rate from 13 Mtpa to 16 Mtpa, with a peak production of 20 Mtpa.
