Background

Lloyds Metals & Energy Ltd. (LMEL) was incorporated in 1977 as a steel manufacturing company. In 1994 LMEL commissioned the 1st part of the Ghugus Unit (Unit 1) and began our production, with an annual capacity of 150 thousand metric tonnes.[1] Experiencing various technical constraints with deterioration in their inputs quality, LMEL has opted for conversion of its 500 TPD kiln from OSIL technology to well proven Lurgi technology. Later the unit has expanded by installing 4 X 100 TPD kilns(with Lurgi technology) in the year 2006 and achieved its production capacity of 270 thousand metric tonnes per annum.[2] LMEL also added a Captive Power Plant (CPP) of 30 MW capacity.[1] LMEL has another steel plant in Konsari, Unit 2.[3]

The plant is undergoing a DRI capacity expansion by 360 ttpa, expected to be commissioned by 2026.[4][5] An addition of electric arc furnace capacity of 1200 ttpa by 2026 is also in pipeline.[6] In 2021, LMEL announced its plan to add a blast furnace of capacity 1050 ttpa to its Ghugus plant, expected to begin operations in 2027.[7][5]

In September 2025, the company announced the commissioning of 360 ttpa of DRI capacity by firing 2 DRI kilns.[8]

In October 2025, the company announced it plan to set up a 1.2 mtpa facility at the Ghugus plant by 2029-30.[9]
