Background

Lloyds Metal and Energy Limited set up its sponge iron manufacturing facility in 1995 near coal-rich area in Ghugus in Chandrapur district in Maharashtra, India.[1] The capacity of the plant was increased from 150 ttpa sponge iron to 270 ttpa in 2006.[2][3] The current capacity of the plant is 324 ttpa.[4] In FY2021 the company announced expansion of the plant to an integrated steel plant at a cost of INR 1,200 crore, to be completed in three phases over a period of eight years. Phase-I of the expansion involves installing an induction furnace based steel plant with a capacity of 250 ttpa at a cost of INR 185 crore which was expected to commence operations in July 2023.[5] The sponge iron facility is expected to reach a capacity of 670 ttpa by FY2026.[6]
