Background

The mine started operations in 2002 under the Madison Mining Company LLC. A year later, Amfire Coal Co., a subsidiary of the Alpha Natural Resources, started operating the Madison Mine.[3] Rosebud Mining Co. acquired Amfire Operations for $86 million in December 2014, adding Madison Mine alongside 9 others to its operations[4]. The sale occurred in a year where Alpha Natural Resources was financially struggling, and only 6 months prior to its bankruptcy.[5]
In 2020, the mine produced 0.5 million short tons, and had 65 employees.[5]
