Background

The Mandakhnuur coal mine (Мандахнуурын нүүрсний уурхай) is a surface coal mine located in Mandakh soum, Dornogovi Province, eastern Mongolia, approximately 165 kilometres from the Mongolian-Chinese border.

The mine is owned and operated by Ikh Gobi Energy LLC (IGE), a privately held Mongolian company founded in 2011 and headquartered in Ulaanbaatar. The concession covers 71,950 hectares (approximately 0.72 square kilometers).[6] The coal deposit has total recoverable reserves of 37.2 million tonnes of coal.[7] The mine extracts anthracite and semi-anthracite coal, which is exported primarily to China via the Khangi border crossing.[6]

IGE commenced mining and overburden removal at Mandakhnuur in 2012. In 2013, the company established a customs control area near the Khangi border port, installing automated weighing systems, and began exporting anthracite coal to China. In 2014, a HITACHI EX2500 excavator with a 15-cubic-metre bucket was commissioned at the site. From 2017, coal haulage to the Khangi border was carried out by Altai Logistic LLC.[8]

The mine has a production capacity of 0.9 million tonnes per annum. Output reached approximately 1 million tonnes in both 2017–2018 and again in 2019.[6]

On 2 September 2025, IGE conducted its first semi-anthracite coal auction on the Mongolian Stock Exchange.[6]
