Marcegaglia Sheffield steel plant, also known as Outokumpu Sheffield SMACC steel plant (predecessor), is a steel plant in Sheffield, England, United Kingdom that operates electric arc furnace (EAF) technology.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Sheffield, England, United Kingdom:
- Location: Europa Link, S9 1TZ, Sheffield, United Kingdom, P.O. Box 161 Sheffield, United Kingdom
- Coordinates (WGS 84): 53.399598, -1.395818 (exact)
Background
The Sheffield plant was built in 1977 by British Steel Stainless, producing both ingots and slab, until 1989 when production was ceased. In 1992 the company was merged into Avvesta Sheffield, which later merged again to become AvestaPolarit in 2001 and then rebranced as Outokumpu in 2003. Production restarted at the plant in 2009 and, in 2023, the plant was acquired by Marcegaglia Group.[1]
In April, 2025, there was an explosion at the plant that required the EAF to be shutdown for 2 days.[2]
Transition
The plant currently operates an EAF for steel production. In 2024, Marcegaglia announced that they would be partering with Primetals Technologies to upgrade their EAF, which is expected to be completed in 2026.[3] The company is investing ₤50 million into the improvements, and it is expected to increased production to 500,000 tonnes per year and create 50 jobs.[4]
