Background

Slovakia Steel Mills announced plans to construct a steel plant on a brownfield site in Strazske in 2007.[1] The plant opened in 2011 with approximately 400 workers and a production capacity of 620 thousand tonnes per annum of electric arc furnace (EAF) steel.[2] However, the plant operated for only a few years before the company went bankrupt, production stopped, and the majority of workers were laid off in 2015.[3] In 2018, the site was acquired by the German Max Aicher Group, but production has not restarted.[4]
