Background

Metalloinvest is also considering using "green" hydrogen at this plant in the future.[1][2]

As of October 2023, the construction has been delayed as the company has to find new suppliers of technology for the project due the sanctions imposed as a result of the Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Previously, Primetals Technologies (UK) and Midrex Technologies (USA) had been contracted for the job.[3]

In October 2023, Metalloinvest mentioned that the company was collaborating with leading Russian industrial companies and think tanks to develop low-carbon hydrogen production and utilization technologies. The company is also exploring opportunities for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage technologies. Currently, Metalloinvest can use up to 55% "gray" hydrogen obtained through methane conversion in the HBI and DRI production. Once built, the new plant will be able to use up to 30% of "green" hydrogen in the mid-term perspective. [4]
