Metinvest Zaporizhstal steel plant (Металлургический комбинат "Запорожсталь", ПАТ Запоріжсталь (Ukranian), ПАО Запорожсталь), also known as Zaporizhstal Iron & Steel Works PJSC, Zaporizhstal Integrated Iron & Steel Works (P)JSC, is a steel plant in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine that operates blast furnace (BF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF), and open hearth furnace (OHF) technology.

Background

Zaporizhstal works closely with Zaporizhzhia Coke Plant and Zaporizhogneupor, which are both controlled by Metinvest Holding.[1] Zaporizhzhia Coke Plant (Запорожкокс, Russian) supplies coke to Zaporizhstal.[2]

The plant was mothballed in March 2022 due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[3] At the end of March, rolling shop resumed operations but steel production remained suspended.[4] As of August 2022, the plant was operating at 50% capacity including steel-making.[5][6][7] The plant resumed iron-making operations with the blast furnaces #3 and #4 in April 2022.[8] Blast furnace #2 restarted in March 2023.[9] As of December 2023, the plant is operating at 70% capacity.[10] Five OHFs are assumed to be operating.

On December 23, 2025, the plant was forced to completely shut down due to a power outage caused by a massive Russian missile strike. The operation was resumed by the end of that same day.[11]

New OHF proposal

A new 3200 TTPA BOF was planned to replace some of the existing OHFs by 2022.[12][13][14][15]
