Background
The Mezhdurechenskiy coal mine (разрез Междуречье) is a surface mine Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. Mezhdurechye owns and operates the mine. It used to be owned by Sibuglemet, whose majority shareholder was the State Development Corporation VEB.[10] In 2022 following the sanctions against many Russian companies, a new company Novaya Gornaya Management Company LLC was formed to replace Sibuglement Holding LLC as the manager of the coal assets.[10] Later in March 2022, VEB ceased to be the the 71% majority shareholder of the Novaya Gornaya Management Company LLC following the management buy-out of the company. Now 4 private individuals individuals each hold 17.6%.[11]
Evraz was planning to acquire the assets of Sibuglemet in 2020, but this deal fell through. Evraz also used to manage Sibuglemet assets from 2015, the management services agreement was terminated in November 2020.[12][13][14]
The mine has a washing plant.[15]
In April 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.8 was recorded in close proximity to the mine.[16]
Coal production in 2024 amounted to 4.29 million tonnes, of which 4.22 million tonnes were coking coal and 0.07 million tonnes were thermal coal.[17]
The company reported that mining operations were conducted across three main areas: the Main Field (metallurgical grades), the Sibirginsky-7 and Sibirginsky Border areas (thermal grades), while the Katylsky section was fully mined out in 2023.[17]
In 2024, the company reported no industrial accidents.[17]
Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources
Global Energy Monitor researchers have identified coal mine boundary/boundaries and potential sources of coal mine methane (CMM) for this mine. These research results can be used to drive CMM attribution and mitigation efforts, particularly when combined with remotely sensed methane plume locations and mine ownership data. Explore the results with the embedded map at the top of this page by clicking on the mine boundary polygon or the CMM placemarkers to reveal more details. A detailed description of this research can be found in Coal Mine Boundaries and Methane Sources. This data is also available as a downloadable companion dataset to the Global Coal Mine Tracker and the Global Methane Emitters Tracker.

Methane Plumes Detected Nearby
Global Energy Monitor researchers analyze satellite-detected methane plumes in order to determine whether they have been observed at or near the site of GEM energy assets. The satellite data provider creates imagery of individual methane plumes and estimates their emission rates at the time of observation. GEM has reviewed many of these plume detections against Google Earth imagery and GEM’s own energy infrastructure tracker data. The following table lists methane plumes which are associated with the energy asset or facility based on distance and manual review. (A full description of the analysis process is available in the Global Methane Emitters Tracker methodology wiki page.)
