Background

Mine 14 is an underground metallurgical coal mine project proposed by Summit Coal Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Valory Resources, near Grande Cache, Alberta, Canada.[3][4]

Summit's Mine 14 was first proposed in 2007 by Milner Power Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Maxim Power Corp.[3] In 2013, the mine permit was transferred to Summit Coal Inc., another Maxim-owned subsidiary. However, in 2022, Summit Coal was acquired by Australian-based Valory Resources.[3]

While Summit already holds approvals for the mine license and permit, a number of operating applications needed to be resubmitted due to having been under review for such an extended period of time (10 plus years) since their initial submission.[5] As of June 2023, Summit has submitted updated regulatory applications to the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). The AER has reviewed these documents and has opened the applications for public comment until late-August 2023.[4]

Controversy

Mine 14 is controversial for a number of reasons, including the fact that the Government of Alberta announced a moratorium on coal development and exploration in 2022, yet Mine 14 was granted an exception.

The mine also poses a risk to several ecological habitats, such as the Smoky River, and Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goat habitat.[3]
