Background
Mine at Cao Son is operated by Cao Son Coal Joint-Stock Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam National Coal (Vinacomin), in Cam Pha, Quang Ninh, Vietnam.[18] The mine is operated by Cao Son Coal Joint-Stock Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam National Coal (Vinacomin).[18]
The mine traces its origins to 1974, when it was built with Soviet Union design and financial assistance as a facility with a designed annual capacity of two million tonnes.[19] The current company was formed on August 5, 2020, through the merger of Cao Son Coal Joint Stock Company and Tay Nam Da Mai Coal Joint Stock Company, under a restructuring plan for the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin/TKV).[19] As of the mid-2020s the company reported a workforce of nearly 3,700 employees across 14 departments and 25 worksites, and described its transport and excavation fleet as among the most modern in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.[19]
The mine is a major producer within Vinacomin's portfolio; in 2025 the company set a target of reaching four million tonnes of raw coal output for the year.[20] Vietnam's Quảng Ninh coalfield, where Cao Son is located, holds the large majority of the country's coal reserves and produces primarily anthracite, a high-carbon, low-impurity coal type.[21] Coal from the region, including thermal-grade anthracite of the kind produced at Cao Son, has been supplied domestically amid periods of national power-sector coal shortages.[22]
