Background
Mine at Duong Huy is operated by Duong Huy Coal Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam National Coal (Vinacomin), in Cam Pha, Vietnam.[21] The mine is operated by Duong HuyCoal Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam National Coal (Vinacomin).[21] The mine produces anthracite, the coal type characteristic of the wider Quảng Ninh coalfield, which holds the large majority of Vietnam's coal reserves.[22]
The company was established on January 7, 1978, having been split off from the Than Điện ("Coal-Electricity") Construction Company under a decision of the (then) Ministry of Mines and Coal.[23] From 2010 onward the company reported raw coal output of around two million tonnes per year, with underground mining accounting for approximately 85 percent of production and surface mining the remainder.[23]
The mine has invested heavily in mechanized longwall technology. Between 2020 and 2023, it phased out older hydraulic-prop support systems entirely in favor of modern powered-support longwalls, and by the mid-2020s operated 11 mechanized longwall faces.[24]
In 2023 the mine extracted more than 2.33 million tonnes of underground coal, the highest output in five years, and drove 25,344 meters of new tunnel; output from mechanized faces alone reached 711,779 tonnes, about 30.5 percent of total production.[24] At a January 2024 year-end review, the company reported 2023 revenue of nearly 3,000 billion đồng and average monthly income of 22.7 million đồng (about 26 million đồng for underground miners specifically), with more than 1,500 miners earning over 300 million đồng for the year and three earning over 600 million đồng; the company also noted that 2023 was its first year in 14 years without a fatal workplace accident.[25]
As of 2023 the company employed 3,423 people, and in 2024 the mine was working toward its designed underground capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per year while planning to extend operations to a depth of -250 meters to prolong the mine's operating life.[24] In the first quarter of 2025, underground output at times reached a reported daily record of 12,000 tonnes, with average monthly income rising to more than 24.5 million đồng (over 28.3 million đồng for underground miners), and the company set a target of 1.3 million tonnes of underground coal for the first half of 2025.[26]
