Background

Mine at Khe Cham 3 (Khe Chàm III) is an underground longwall coal mine in Mông Dương, Vân Đồn District, Quảng Ninh Province, Vietnam, operated by Khe Cham Coal Company – TKV. The mine was designed with a capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per year and is accessed via a pair of inclined shafts roughly 1.6 kilometers long, descending at a 12-degree grade from the surface (elevation +25 m) to a depth of -300 m. Construction began in early 2006, and the mine's first coal was extracted on November 10, 2013, at an initial investment of over 2,200 billion Vietnamese đồng. The mine produces anthracite, the coal type characteristic of the wider Quảng Ninh coalfield, which holds the large majority of Vietnam's coal reserves.

As of a 2021 industry survey, Khe Cham III was one of only 11 underground mines nationally with a large-deposit designation and comprehensive mining infrastructure and technology, each producing 1.0 million tonnes per year or more; the mine's reported capacity was listed at 2.5 million tonnes per year, comparable to other major underground operations such as Vang Danh (3.7 million tonnes), Nam Mau (2.5 million tonnes) and Khe Tam (2.5 million tonnes).
