Background
Mine at Mao Khe is operated by Mao Khe Coal Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam National Coal (Vinacomin), in Vietnam.[16] The Mao Khe mine is operated by Mao Khe Coal Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam National Coal (Vinacomin).[16]
The mine has been in operation since 1954 and produces anthracite thermal coal.[17] It uses both underground and surface mining methods.[18] In 2025, the company reported production results and continued operations.[19] The mine has approximately 3,900 workers and a capacity of 1.6 Mtpa.[20] The Mao Khe Thermal Power Plant sources coal from Mao Khe, Trang Bach, Khe Chuoi, and Hong Thai mines.[21]
In December 2023, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment issued License No. 586/GP-BTNMT to Mao Khe Coal Company for the open-pit exploitation of the Mao Khe coal seams.[22] The investment project to expand open-pit mining at the Mao Khe coal seams covers a total area of 70.7 hectare(ha), comprising a mining area of 43.8 ha and a waste dump area of 26.9 ha; 43 households are expected to be relocated from areas at risk of landslides and flooding in Mao Khe and Yen Tho wards.[22] The project involves mining from the seam outcrop to a depth of -50 m, with a reserve of over 1.72 million tonnes of coal, a capacity of 250,000 tonnes of raw coal per year, and a mining duration of 8 years.[22] In the first two months of 2024, open-pit coal output reached 10,000 tonnes.[22]

Extension
In 2019, coal at shallow levels of the mine was exhausted. In order to maintain the mine, Vinacomin assigned Mao Khe company to implement the Mao Khe project to exploit pit mining below depths of 150 meters. Mining operations at this level were expected to generate coal starting in 2021.[27]
The project, which has a planned capacity of 2 million tons per year and an expected life time of 32 years, was first proposed in November 2014.[27]
