Background

Mine at Mong Duong is an operating underground coal mine in Mong Duong Ward, Cam Pha City, Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam.[16] It is owned by Mong Duong Coal Joint Stock Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam National Coal (Vinacomin).[17] The mine has been in operation since 1982, with a planned closing year of 2044, a capacity of 1.65 Mtpa, and approximately 3,000 workers.[18][19] It produces anthracite thermal coal and uses longwall mining.[20] The mine's output objective is 1.5 million tons of coal per year, requiring approximately 10,000 meters of tunnel excavation annually.[21] In 2025, the company reported a decrease in profit due to high costs.[22] The mine extracts at depths of 550 meters.[19] Optimizing underground construction and plan management at the mine has been studied in the Journal of Sustainable Mining.[23]

In the first quarter of 2024, the company produced 380,000 tonnes of coal, excavated over 4,500 metres of tunnels, and sold 376,000 tonnes of coal.[24] Average employee income in Q1 2024 exceeded 19 million VND per month, with underground miners earning over 21 million VND per month.[24] For 2024, the company set a target of producing 1.55 million tonnes of raw coal.[24] To achieve this, the company implemented technical solutions adapted to mine conditions, including reviewing and recalculating protective pillars and longwall stopping limits to regulate face transfer timing, avoiding simultaneous face transfers, and ensuring continuous operation of mechanized longwalls.[24] The company also reviewed hydrogeological conditions and safety conditions of longwalls and tunnel faces, implementing prevention measures against water inrush and roof collapse risks.[24]

The mine was the first in Vietnam's coal industry to apply vertical shaft mining technology.[25] In 2019, the company invested in and installed a lightweight mechanized longwall mining system with a capacity of 300,000 tonnes per year, the first of its kind in TKV, which began operation in 2020.[26][27]
