Background

The Quang Hanh Coal Mine is an operating underground coal mine in Quảng Ninh Province, Vietnam. The Quang Hanh coal mine is an underground coal mine. It is operated by Quang Hanh Coal Company (Công ty Than Quang Hanh), a subsidiary of state-owned coal mining company Vinacomin.

The company was established on 1 May 2003 through the conversion of a former geology and mineral-exploitation company into coal production, and is a member of the state-owned Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin/TKV). At founding, the company has said it inherited a widely dispersed and previously unregulated resource area with a high risk of water and gas inrush, poor coal quality, and little existing infrastructure or transport access. From September 2004 the company consolidated its two-tier management structure into one tier, transferred the Dong Bac Mong Duong mine site to Mong Duong Coal Company, closed the Ke Bao coal mine, and dissolved its auxiliary enterprises into subordinate workshops, concentrating investment instead on developing the Nga Hai mine site.

The mine works several thin-to-medium coal seams at depth in geologically difficult ground, with faulting and variable seam thickness and dip. To sustain output, the company developed a project at the -50 metre level with a capacity of 700,000 tonnes per year, and has since progressed to a deeper mining project spanning the -175 to -300 metre horizon with a sustained capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year, using tunnelling equipment including Polish-made AM-50Z roadheaders and Swedish Tamrock drilling rigs alongside plastic, concrete, and cable roof-bolt support systems. The company was also assigned by TKV to build and operate the Lep My coal-washing plant, which processes coal for both Quang Hanh and neighbouring Duong Huy Coal Company at a capacity of around 3.3 million tonnes per year, with a planned expansion to 4 million tonnes per year.

Since 2015, part of the mine has used a fully mechanized longwall (ZQY 3600/12/28 support with an MG 132/320-W shearer), one of only four such mechanized longwalls introduced in Quang Ninh's underground mines for seams of thin-to-medium thickness, with a design capacity of roughly 180,000 tonnes per year.

Coal output grew from 242,000 tonnes in 2003, the company's first full year, to 1 million tonnes by 2006, and to a sustained underground capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year by 2023 — a roughly sixteen-fold increase — with several years recording 30–50% year-on-year growth in raw coal output and average annual revenue growth reported at more than 30%. The company has reported that owners' equity grew 14–15 times over the period from 2003, and that average worker income rose from about 7.2 million VND per month in 2010 to more than 18 million VND per month in 2022, an increase of more than 10.8 million VND per month over that period; underground miners specifically earned more than 21 million VND per month by 2022. The composition of its underground workforce has also shifted toward higher-skilled labour: in 2009 the company employed 1,426 underground miners, including 216 at skill level 5/6 and 59 at level 6/6, alongside 240 staff with university degrees; by 2018 the underground workforce was 1,403, including 356 at level 5/6 and 295 at level 6/6, with 601 university-degree staff. The company has stated a goal of becoming a "modern, safe, green, high-output, high-income mine" through continued mechanization, automation, and digitalization of its operations.

Company figures reported to its trade union show raw coal output of 3,399,688 tonnes and clean coal production of 3,027,862 tonnes in 2023, close to plan and about 5% above 2022 levels.

Coal mined at Quang Hanh, like elsewhere in the Quang Ninh coalfield, is anthracite with a stable carbon content of more than 80%, typically used for thermal purposes. A 2023 industry study on mechanized coal reserves in the Quang Ninh area lists the seams evaluated for mechanization at Quang Hanh as containing approximately 1.8 million tonnes of the roughly 231 million tonnes of reserves regionwide assessed as suitable for mechanized extraction.
