Background

On 03 September 2008, National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chhattisgarh government to set up a steel plant with an annual capacity of 3 mtpa at an estimated cost of INR 14,000 crore.[1] The project was delayed for several years as it failed to receive environmental clearances. The trial production at the plant began in July 2023 and commercial production started in September 2023.[2] The plant was built over an area of 1,980 acres and at a cost of INR 24,000 crore.[3] NMDC Steel Ltd plans to privatise the steel plant.[4][5]
