Background

The New Creek mine is an opencast sub-bituminous coal mine northeast of Westport on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The mine is owned by New Zealand Coal & Carbon Limited. New Creek Mine is located 40 kilometres (25 miles) east of the township of Westport, on the South Island’s West Coast within the Inangahua coalfield.

The mine was originally opened for limited domestic use. New Creek Mining Limited purchased the operation from a local operator in 2010 with export markets in mind. Its coal is a high sulphur, sub-bituminous coal, which is suitable for cement and thermal applications.
