Background

The Nucor-Yamato Steel Blytheville began operating in 1988 as a joint venture between Nucor Steel and Yamato Steel and produces structural steel shapes, including carbon steel wide-flange beams, H-piling, sheet piling, and standard I-beams.[1][2]

In 2016, two workers died at the plant after separate accidents.[3] Nucor-Yamato was fined around $56,000 for the first death, which was partially due to violations in Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards.[4]

In 2019, Nucor-Yamato, working with SMS, began an upgrade to the plant which was expected to be finished in 2020; however, there has been no confirmation if this upgrade has been completed yet.[5]
